People4Soil initiative

People4Soil” was an international campaign – supported by European NGOs, research institutes, farmers associations and environmental groups – lobbying for the protection of soil at legislative level within the European Union.

In 2015, the Alliance decided to officially support the campaign People4Soil and to join the call on European institutions to adopt specific legislation on soil protection, assuming sustainable soil management as a primary commitment. As a global network, we shared the initiators’ concerns about increasing soil degradation both in the EU and at global level: erosion, sealing, loss of organic matter, compaction, salinisation, landslides and contamination have negative impacts on human health, food security, natural ecosystems, biodiversity and climate, as well as on our economy. Sustainable management of soil is closely linked to the universal right of all people to live in a safe place and have access to healthy food.

People4Soil was a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI), i.e. a call on the European Commission to elaborate legislation regarding certain issues which has to be backed by at least one million EU citizens, coming from at least 7 out of the 28 member states. Having started in September 2016, an online petition ran till 12 September 2017, offering European citizens the chance to recommend EU legislation on soil by adding their signature.

At the closing date, it turned out the target number of one million signatures could not be reached. Still, the campaign was a valuable exclamation and step in advocating sustainable soil management in the EU. Thank you to everyone who gave their voice for healthy soil!
