The Alliance, founded in 1982, is presently made up of 85 member and partners from 53 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Each member organisation runs an annual programme of International Volunteer Projects in their own country and exchanges volunteers with each other following the Alliance Quality Charter. Every year an average of 12.000 young volunteers participate in more than 1.200 local community projects organised by member and partner organisations.
Membership of the Alliance is open to national organisations involved in international voluntary service in Europe. Member organisations promote international understanding, peace and voluntary service that enable people, particularly young people, to encounter and exchange with different cultures. Full membership is open to organisations from Europe, but organisations from other countries can become Associate Members. In order to become full or associate members, new organisations first receive the status of Candidate Members, which lasts for a minimum of two years and a maximum of 5 years.
